JAVA

I went to Java in September 2001 with my two brothers, James and David, and our friend Niall. We stayed at the city of Yogykarta, but the main attractions were not in the city itself.

To read a bit more about this holiday, have a look at James' site.

Images from the Buddhist temple at Borobudur (~900 years old)

Images from the Hindu temple at Pranmahan (~1200 years old)

There is one main shrine with a number of smaller ones around it. A statue of a Hindu god can be found in each one.

This is Ganesh, the baby elephant god.

This the protector god, whose name I can't remember but I think it begins with ans S, who lives in the largest shrine.

Images from the Ramayana Ballet, performed outside the temple at Pranmahan.

It is a tale about an Archer, called Rama, who's mistress is stolen by the evil Giants. But he gets her back successfully with the help of the monkeys, in particular , the whHanumanite monkey. The fire is no accident! It was from a scene where Hanman escapes from the clutches of the Giants and sets fire to their temple.

Here is Mount Murapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupting every 5 years on average. Lava is constantly leaking out.

Here we are ascending a nearby mountain as to have a look at the volcano.

Here we are with the staff at the hotel we stayed at in Yogykarta.

Here's Dave, with his 'holiday girlfriend', Vitri.

At first we thought that she'd said her name was 'Victory'!
