FRANCE

I have made several trips to France in my life, indeed in 6 consecutive summers we made trips to Nice, in the South. On each occasion we stayed at what was formerly a small Canadian University campus on Mont Leuze (~300m abo nice nice man villages which areve sea level).

Here I am with the parents at our holiday campus
Here is Dave above to take a dive in the pool there.

Here is James and myself near a fountian in central Nice

Here is the whole family in the restauranty area of the Nice, the flower market.

Something we probably did too much of in Nice was dine. And I do like Paëlla.

Here is a pleasant view of Beaulieu beach, where we often went to bathe.

Here is another pleasant view of Beaulieu beach.

Here are a few photos of our brief trip to Paris in August 1997. There was a moment of great drama on this holiday when a bee flew into my ear and had to go to hospital to have it taken. Princess Diana also went to hopital that day, but her plight was rather more serious. We returned to Paris for a few days in July 2003 while pam was doing her MA in European studies.

Here is the cathedral of Notre-Dame, where Quasi-Modo came from. It's located on a island in the middle of the river Seine. I remember there being lots of figurines around the front entrance, many of which were holding their decapitated heads in their hands.

I don't need to tell you what building that is,

There's the Arc de Triomphe,

Taken from the top of Le Tour Eiffel.

Here's another photo taken from the top of the Eiffel Tower, of Le Palais de Chaillot.

L'Hôtel des invalides

Here is the obelisk that appears in the centre of La Place de la Concorde near the Louvre museum. Click on the photo to see it in more detail.
Here le musée d'Orsay. It used to be a train station but now is an art mueum.

It certainly looks like a train station on the inside
There are some paintings there by Vincent Van Gogh, such as this one of a starlit sky at Arles. The Great Bear is clearly visible.

Here's a nice one by Auguste Renoir.
I also went to the Louvre museum

There are lots of interesting works of art at the Louvre, like this wall painting of Neptune coming out of the sea on his chariot.
Here is an interesting pair of paintings showing a museum containing all of the interesting places in Rome, ancient Rome on the left and modern Rome on the right. Shame you can't see it in more detail here

You might recognise this one.
There are also some Roman and Greek statues there. Here is the statue of an actor, taken from the amphitheatre at Pompeii (I think)

Here is Diana, the hunting goddess.
I also saw a few Egyptian things, like this Sphinx.

We visited the Sainte-Chappelle. It's construction was completed nin 1248, under King Louis IX.
Here a view of the upstairs section, with the beautiful stained-glass windows. Louis IX used this chapel to store some precious relics, such as the crown of thorns.

I went to la Cimȇtiere du Montparnasse. A few famous people are buried there (Jean-Paul Satre, Eugene Ionesco and Serge Ginsbourg (<<Oh Je t'aime>>). I don't think the grave I'm standing next to here belongs to anyone important, but it's kind of creepy.
Some rather less fortunate Parisiens were buried here, in the catacombs. The bones of over 5 million people have been stacked up here, very neatly! Some people took refuge here during the second world war.

During the second Paris trip we visited Versailles, which is just to the southwest of Paris. Here is le chateau de Versaille, where last three Louis kings lived before the Revolution changed things a bit. The man on the horse is Louis IV.
Here's another statue of Louis IV. He was a very little man and often wore high heals.

Here's his little bed. There used to be a little secret door to the right of the bed as we see it leading to the queen's bechamber.
The palace is very beautifully decorated in places.

Many of the rooms have paintings with chaacters of Greek mythology on the ceiling. Herecles (or Hercules) is in this one.
Here's the famous Hall of Mirrors, where the treaty that ended the Second World War was signed. Mirrors were extremely expensive in the 17th century.

Here is another part of the palace, Le Grand Trianon. Sadly we didn't have to go in and have a look.
This one is Le Petit Trianon. Marie Antoinette lived here for a long time.

Here is just a small part of the extensive gardens surrouding the palace.

In 1998, as well as visiting Nice, we went to the town of Arles.

Here's mum and dad in the cloisters of the Chapelle de Saint-Pierre.

Here's Pam in the downstairs bit.

Here is an ampiheatre at Arles.

Below are views of the town of Ardêches, followed by some shots inside the caves.

We also went to Reims in northern France in 1998. Below is a photograph of the from of the cathedral, a very pretty cathedral, and an interesting waterfountain in the town square.

We took another trip to France in August 1999, this time the tour did not include Nice. The highlight of this trip was the total eclpise on the 11th of that month. A very memorable two minutes indeed, meeing the Sun's corona, and 'Bailey's beads' and diamond ring effect. Below are photos of us eating our lunch at a restaurant later that day. Our friend Niall joined us for that part of the trip.

Later that holiday we took a trip to Montreil-Sur-Mer, which is near Dieppe in the north of France.

Here are some images of the Chateau at Chenonceau in the Loire Valley.

In June 2002 I went to Perpignan to visit Pam, my sister, who was teaching at the University there at the time.

Here are some photos taken at the palace of the Majorcan kings.
