BANGKOK
I spent a couple of days in Bangkok, the over-populated and poluted capital city of Thailand, with my brother David in September 2001. There are a large number of Buddhist Shrines, gem shops, tailor shops, phoney desginer clothes shops, go-go bars, ladyboys and conmen. The photos below are mainly of the shrines.
Images from Wat Ka Phrew, adjacent to the Royal Palace. It is the home of the famous emerald Buddha, a Buddha statue made of jade which is just 40cm high. Sadly, public photography of the emerald Buddha is prohibited.

Images from Wat Pho, The home of the 18m lond reclining Buddha. The reclining Buddh is a dying Buddha, but he is happy as he is bout to enter the state of nirvana. The paintings on the soles of the Buddha's left foot,is a near perfect mirror image of the paintings on his right foot. The seven snakes above the head of Buddha in third image are there to protect him. |

Here are images from some of the other shrines we visited, including the 32m tall, but sad-looking, standing Buddha. |
